Deck Staining Long Island
Deck staining and sealing for Long Island decks — cedar, pressure-treated, IPE, mahogany. We strip old finishes properly, brighten the wood, and apply a penetrating or solid stain that actually lasts through a New York winter.
Deck Staining done right, from prep to final coat
Deck finishing is misunderstood. Most homeowners slap on another coat of stain over the old, peeling layer and call it a day — then wonder why it fails again in 8 months. We take decks back to bare wood when needed (chemical stripper + pressure wash), brighten with oxalic acid wood brightener, let it dry 24–48 hours, then apply the right product for the wood species: Penofin penetrating oil for IPE and cedar, Benjamin Moore Arborcoat semi-transparent for pressure-treated, or solid-color stain when the wood is past its prime. Transparent stains show the grain but need reapplication every 2 years. Solid stains last 4–6 years but cover the texture. We tell you which makes sense for your deck based on age, species, and past finishes. Long Island's climate creates specific deck staining challenges that differ from the interior Northeast. The humidity patterns here — high moisture from late May through September, combined with salt-air exposure on the South Shore and North Shore coasts — accelerate surface failure on any deck finish that isn't fully penetrating. Film-forming deck paints and low-quality semi-transparent stains lose adhesion to LI decks faster than almost anywhere in the region because the wood expands and contracts with the humidity cycle and the film simply can't flex with it. We spec penetrating oils on every LI deck where the wood condition permits — they don't film and they don't peel, they just dry out over time and need a refresher coat. The major deck wood types we see on Long Island: pressure-treated (most common, used on the majority of decks built before 2005), cedar (common on North Shore Colonials and craftsman-style homes in the 1980s-1990s), IPE (premium grade on post-Sandy rebuilds and South Shore contemporary homes), and mahogany or meranti (medium-priced alternative to IPE on newer decks from the 2010s). Each species takes a different product and different prep pressure. Cedar gets 600 PSI maximum on the wash — anything higher raises grain. IPE gets a full chemical strip because its oils repel water-based products unless the surface is stripped clean. Deck staining costs on Long Island run $800 to $2,500 for a standard residential deck depending on size, species, and condition. A 400 sqft pressure-treated deck with minor peeling that needs clean-only (not full strip) runs $800 to $1,200. A 600 sqft cedar or IPE deck needing full chemical strip, brighten, and two-coat penetrating oil runs $1,800 to $2,800. We include minor board repairs (re-screw loose boards, set popped nails) at no extra charge on every deck staining job.
Our process — step by step
- 1
Assess
Walk the deck, identify species, note failed boards, recommend strip vs clean-only, and pick the right stain type for your goals.
- 2
Strip & Brighten
Chemical strip failed finish (if needed), pressure-wash at the right PSI for the species, brighten with oxalic acid. 24–48 hour dry.
- 3
Repair
Loose boards re-screwed, popped nails set, splinters sanded, rotted boards replaced and primed.
- 4
Stain & Seal
Penetrating oil or solid stain applied in thin coats, back-brushed for even absorption. Railings and spindles detailed by hand.

Why homeowners pick us for this job
Strip, Don't Slap On
We don't paint over failed stain. That's how you get a deck that peels in a year. We take it to bare wood when the old finish is failing.
Species-Matched Product
IPE needs Penofin. Cedar wants breathable oil. Pressure-treated takes Arborcoat well. We don't one-size-fits-all your deck.
Back-Brushed
Stain that sits on the surface instead of being back-brushed into the grain will fail early. We back-brush every board, every time.

Common Questions
Deck Staining FAQs
How often do I need to re-stain my deck?+
Depends on stain type and sun exposure. Transparent/penetrating stains: every 2 years. Semi-transparent: 3–4 years. Solid color stains: 4–6 years. South-facing decks re-coat on the shorter end of each range.
Can you stain a deck that's been painted?+
Yes, but it's a bigger job. Painted decks need full stripping to bare wood before stain can penetrate. Sometimes a solid-color stain over existing paint is the right answer — we walk you through the tradeoffs.
What's the best time to stain a deck on Long Island?+
Late May to mid-June, and mid-September to mid-October — the same exterior painting windows. Stain needs 48 dry hours on each side of application, and you don't want morning dew undoing the first coat.
Do you stain pressure-treated wood?+
Yes. New pressure-treated needs 6–12 months to dry out before first stain — we can confirm with a moisture meter. Older PT deck boards take stain beautifully with Benjamin Moore Arborcoat or Sherwin-Williams SuperDeck.
How much does deck staining cost on Long Island?+
A standard 400 sqft pressure-treated deck needing clean-only (no strip) runs $800 to $1,200 including Arborcoat semi-transparent application. A 600 sqft cedar or IPE deck requiring full chemical strip, oxalic acid brighten, and two-coat penetrating oil runs $1,800 to $2,800. Full pricing depends on size, species, condition, and whether a strip is needed. We provide a written estimate after seeing the deck.
What's the best deck stain for South Shore Long Island homes near salt water?+
For South Shore homes within a mile of Great South Bay or barrier island channels, we recommend Penofin penetrating oil or Cabot Australian Timber Oil — both are designed for coastal exposure and resist the UV degradation that salt-air environments accelerate. Film-forming products (deck paint, solid stains) tend to fail faster in salt-air because the wood moves with humidity and the film cracks at the joints. Penetrating oils move with the wood rather than cracking off the surface.
How do you stain an IPE deck on Long Island?+
IPE (Brazilian hardwood) is one of the most common premium deck materials we see on Long Island — especially on post-Sandy rebuilds on the South Shore and newer construction on the North Shore. IPE has a dense, oil-rich grain that repels most water-based stains unless the surface is properly opened first. Our IPE sequence: chemical stripper to remove any existing finish and surface oils, pressure wash at 800–1,000 PSI, oxalic acid brightener to open the grain, 48-hour dry, then Penofin Ultra Hardwood penetrating oil applied in 2 coats back-brushed into the grain. We never apply Arborcoat or water-based stains to IPE without this prep — they will bead off and fail within months.
Can you stain composite decking on Long Island?+
We can apply specialty composite deck cleaners and restorers to Trex, TimberTech, and similar composite decking, but we do not apply stain or paint to composites — composites are engineered to resist stain penetration, so traditional staining products simply don't adhere. If your composite deck has faded, chalked, or developed a white mineral haze, we can clean and restore the original color with appropriate composite-specific products. Call for a free assessment.
